Artist Statement

As a proud Cree artist living and working in the Bow Valley, it is an honour to create this body of work with Bridget Ryan and Carter-Ryan Gallery, for the Canmore Hospital Emergency Department. When approaching this project, the intention was to create a body of work that instills positivity, perspective, and a sense of hope, not just for the visitors to this healing centre, but those that work here day in and day out. The 14 illustrations designed for the emergency department draw on each of these motifs from our shared natural environment. The natural world is the great healer, it instills hope, humour, and perspective by its very presence. By drawing inspiration from the land and its inhabitants, one may find calmness when there is a storm, strength when it seems fleeting and hope that only perspective can provide.

– Jason Carter, Artist & Bridget Ryan, Creative Director Carter-Ryan Gallery

“On behalf of the Canmore Hospital Foundation I want to express my gratitude to Jason Carter and Bridget Ryan for their remarkable gift. It is partnerships like this with Carter Ryan Gallery combined with the generosity of our donors and community support that have made the revitalization of the Emergency Department at Canmore General Hospital possible. The inclusion of original works of art by such talented local artists will not only enhance the new space but will help capture the distinctiveness of this community.”
