Join the Canmore & Area Health Care Foundation for an extraordinary evening at artsPlace as they host "Chemo and Cougars: My Journey with Cancer as a Wildlife Photographer," featuring the renowned wildlife photographer, John E. Marriott. This unique event promises an inspiring, emotional, and visually stunning multimedia presentation that traces John's remarkable journey with cancer.
At "Chemo and Cougars," John will share his story and showcase his images from the past year. From cougars to grizzly bears, muskox, and more, he will take you on a visual journey, offering insights into the beauty of the wild and his personal triumph over adversity.
The Journey
John Marriott's remarkable journey takes a deeply personal turn. In September 2022, he received a devastating double diagnosis of colon and kidney cancer. In November 2022, he underwent a seven-hour surgery to remove his left kidney and a significant portion of his colon. Following the surgery, in December 2022, he embarked on a gruelling five-month cycle of eight rounds of chemotherapy at the Canmore clinic.
What sets John's journey apart is his unwavering determination not to be a victim of his circumstances. Throughout his chemotherapy, he continued doing what he loved - capturing the untamed beauty of the Canadian wilderness. John's incredible resilience led to winter hikes in temperatures as low as -34°C, tracking cougars, and photographing nature's wonders while enduring the harsh effects of chemotherapy.
One of the world's leading wildlife photographers
John E. Marriott has captured stunning images of wildlife in the Banff and Canmore area. Notably, his work adorns the local ROAM wildlife buses, showcasing his deep connection with the region's natural beauty.
In 2012, John was honored as the Runner-Up in the Portraits category of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, a prestigious recognition in the wildlife photography world. His image of a raven, titled "Fluff-Up," became the primary marketing image for the 2013 world tour.
Supporting a Worthy Cause
The presentation serves as a fundraiser for the Canmore Cancer Clinic, in partnership with the Canmore & Area Health Care Foundation and artsPlace. The Canmore Cancer Clinic, located in the Canmore Hospital, plays a crucial role in providing local chemotherapy treatments and support services to patients throughout the Bow Valley region.
The Foundation provides up to $50,000 annually to offset the costs of Cancer Care Clinic programming, including services like massage therapy, transportation assistance, and grocery vouchers. These services are vital to the well-being of cancer patients and their caregivers in the community.
Your attendance and contributions to "Chemo and Cougars" will directly support the Cancer Clinic and these essential programs, making a significant difference in the lives of those affected by cancer in the Bow Valley.
Join us for this exceptional evening of inspiration, wildlife photography, and a celebration of resilience, all for a noble cause. Together, we can make a difference and help the Canmore Cancer Clinic continue its essential work.
Don't miss this extraordinary opportunity to be a part of an unforgettable journey - one of hope, courage, and the wild beauty of the Canadian Rockies!
